Full-time Medical Director (PhD or MD)

An established laboratory for high throughput COVID-19 testing is seeking a Medical Director for their Syracuse, NY genetics and epigenetics R&D lab, which focuses on the early detection of neurological diseases and other health issues. With the help of the hired Medical Director, the lab will become CLEP certified for their molecular genetic saliva swab test, which is amongst the most sensitive saliva tests in the US market presently. 

As such, we are searching for a genetics expert to join their team as Medical Director and lead this expansion. This individual does not necessarily need to possess COVID experience or the qualifications to Direct that testing, but preference will be given to those who are additionally qualified to oversee COVID, as well as lead their genetics team.


  • Assist with CLEP licensure and compliance.
  • Ensure the employment of qualified laboratory personnel, evaluation of job performance of such personnel and their in service training and define the qualifications and responsibilities of all laboratory technical staff, as well as document training and/or competency.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are established for monitoring staff to assess competency, and whenever necessary, provide remedial training or continuing education to improve skills.
  • Provide oversight of all aspects of the laboratory quality management system to ensure conformance to requirements described in the Quality Management System.
  • Provide effective and efficient administrative direction of the lab, including budget planning and controls in conjunction with the individual(s) responsible for financial management of the lab.
  • Provide advice to referring physicians regarding the significance of laboratory findings and ensure that reports of test results include pertinent information required for specific patient interpretation.
  • Ensure that testing systems in the laboratory provide quality services in all aspects of test performance, i.e., the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing and are appropriate for the patient population.
  • Ensure that physical and environmental conditions of the laboratory are adequate and appropriate for the testing performed, including that the environment for employees is safe from physical, chemical, and biological hazards and that the safety and biohazard requirements are followed.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is enrolled in an approved proficiency testing program for the testing performed and that the proficiency testing samples are tested as required by CLIA.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, administrative officials and the medical community.


The ideal candidate will possess a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or DO), one of the below listed board certifications, and hold or be eligible to obtain a New York Certificate of Qualification in Genetic Testing; preference will also be given to those who are eligible or possess the NYCQ in Virology. 

For PhDs:  

  • ABB – American Board of Bioanalysis
  • ABCC – American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Molecular Diagnostics
  • ABMGG – American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (formerly known as American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG))
  • ABMM – American Board of Medical Microbiology

For MDs/DOs:  

  • ABP—American Board of Pathology certification in Clinical Pathology
  • Current unrestricted New York Medical License or eligibility to obtain such
