Lab Manager of Dermatopathology

Lighthouse Lab Services has partnered with a well-established lab in New York City and we are a looking for a Lab Manager of Dermatopathology to join the team. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Functions as Administrative Medical Laboratory Scientist in a general and technical capacity.
  • Manages and directs activities of the Dermatopathology Laboratory in accordance with accepted standards and policies as set forth by regulatory bodies, operational leadership and lab director.
  • Responsible for staff direction, special projects, evaluation of current standards of quality, and other programs affecting the quality of patient care and employee relations through the laboratory
  • Responsible for oversight of the performance in the laboratory; maintains performance improvement activities within the department; responsible for enforcing all SOPs.
  • Oversees the training of all laboratory personnel and assigns and supervises their activities. Recommends methods and procedures for improvement in workflow and quality.
  • Maintains a Quality Assurance program and assumes responsibility for the reliability of results reported under their supervision according to College of American Pathologist (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and State and Federal Regulations
  • Regularly reviews and revises, as necessary, laboratory Policies and Procedures to ensure that they comply with current practice and all regulatory agency standards; confirms all policies and procedures are followed at all times
  • Orders and manages supply inventory; understands contractual agreements with vendors; operating costs while maintaining quality
  • Responsible for the coordination of strategy and financial analysis of the Laboratory Services Department
  • Reviews and prepares operational budget in cooperation with Executive Administration
  • Responsible for the review and presentation of P&L(s) and ROI(s) for Laboratory Services
  • Provides statistical data to Executive Leadership accurately, on a timely basis, and insures proper maintenance of department records
  • Prepares, reviews, and presents quality and safety reports to Executive Leadership with identified goal achievement
  • Continually evaluating cost savings initiatives through the analysis and review of the financial, billing, coding operations of the department as well as the evaluation of instrumentation supply costs, service agreements, and technology capabilities
  • Responsible for integrating their department's services with the organizations mission and strategic plan(s)
  • Responsible for the selection, training, evaluation, and necessary discipline of staff
  • Establishes goals for the department, evaluates employee performance, and maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustments
  • Recommends a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care/service and assures the qualifications and competence of those staff members meet the regulatory and business requirements.
  • Interviews prospective personnel, makes recommendations on hiring and firing, manages disciplinary action, and annual reviews and competency evaluations for staff
  • Maintains quality results by participating in the laboratory quality management system; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records
  • Maintains pre analytical variation which includes accessioning, specimen processing, and policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accreditation with College of American Pathologists (CAP), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), licensing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
  • Ensures laboratory is compliant with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Monitoring reports for turnaround times of results
  • Participates with project/committee leadership for Laboratory scope
  • Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress
  • Involved with investigation, implementation, and method review of new tests within the Laboratory Services scope
  • Laboratory Information system (LIS) subject matter expert; implements functionally to improve efficiency
  • Writing procedures / SOP that support the workflow of the lab; creates training material and training programs; ensures all newly implemented procedures are adopted.


  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related field with MT(ASCP) or certification?required
  • Master’s degree in healthcare management or Business Administration preferred
  • Certification as Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) required
  • 10 years of histology laboratory experience
  • 5 years of management experience
  • Familiarity with insurance, CPT coding, billing, and reimbursement practices

Additional Skills: (in addition to the ability to carry out the above responsibilities effectively)

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Electronic Medical Record (Modernizing Medicine) and Laboratory Information Systems (Novopath)
  • Effective delegation and leadership
  • Ability to see opportunities and create/execute improvements and ask for help
  • Collaborate with other departments to improve patient/staff experience
  • Clear and concise communication skills; work with Director to create transparency, discuss lab status, share opportunities
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory automation, data interpretation, and laboratory statistics
  • Regularly reads literature related to scientific area of expertise to remain current in knowledge and technology
