The Lead Laboratory Tech performs laboratory testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met.
This position ensures the efficient operation of the department by providing technical support to the staff. The Lead Laboratory Tech performs tests in compliance with established departmental standards. The Lead Laboratory Tech reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity and interprets results. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. This position also participates in the evaluation of new equipment and troubleshoots equipment problems as needed. This position will support the section Leader with workflow, meeting department productivity standards, and regulatory compliance and inventory management.
The Lead Laboratory Tech performs and documents quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards. This position works with the Laboratory Leadership to resolve quality control, patient or procedural problems, recommends enhancements to laboratory process and maintains resources in a fiscally responsible manner. The Lead Laboratory Tech is responsible for orienting and training laboratory staff, assisting the leadership with staff scheduling, staff competency and evaluation and acts as a resource person to other team members. The Lead Laboratory Tech will support providing adequate staffing levels as needed in the laboratory management on-call rotation as needed.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences required. Master’s degree preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) required; Specialist (ASCP) certification or eligible.
EXPERIENCE: 2 year clinical laboratory experience required, molecular experience preferred, experience in a lead/supervisory capacity and preferred. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.
