PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for the clinical testing and resulting of patient specimens received from clients in the areas of chemistry, hematology, endocrinology, and immunoassay.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Perform each duty in compliance with all regulatory policies and procedures (HIPAA, CLIA, CAP, COLA, NYS, and OSHA)

– Prepare the proper materials required for testing (reagents, calibrators, and quality controls).

– Retrieve specimens from specimen management department to submit to the department for analysis.

– Utilize the LIS to process, load, and verify specimens for analysis.

– Prepare and load calibrators, quality controls, and patient samples for analysis in compliance with the operating procedures.

– Verify accuracy of specimen adequacy and integrity.

– Enter or post results into the LIS as necessary to maintain acceptable turn-around-time.

– Store all specimens in the designated location at the end of each day.

– Maintain maintenance, calibration, quality control, water quality, and temperature logs.

– Perform daily maintenance and cleaning procedures following the operating procedures.

– Tracking inventory of reagents, and supplies used for analysis of specimens.

– Perform all tasks following the safety guidelines indicated in the safety training and procedures.

– Review of all documentation associated with tasks performed.

– Completion of all training associated with the tasks performed.

– Perform routine and complex analysis of patient specimens according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). Evaluate specimen acceptability upon receipt and during the review of analysis results. Evaluate validity of specimen results against the algorithms displayed by the lab computer system. Document all corrective actions taken. Perform secondary review of patient results when required to ensure accuracy of primary result entry.

– Provide oversight and guidance to Laboratory Technicians and/or Assistants.

– Maintain quality control of all laboratory testing to ensure accurate and timely lab reporting.

– Follow standard operating procedures and quality control protocols to ensure the accuracy of patient results.

– Ensure that all instrumentation associated with the department is suitable for patient testing by performing function checks as described in the operating procedures

– Monitor production processes and assure operations are consistent and efficient.

– Perform pending workload review periodically during the day; find pending assays and resolve outstanding work prior to the completion of testing for the day.

– Assist in the development and writing of new laboratory procedures and techniques.

– Follow safety procedures as per laboratory SOPs.

– Notify appropriate staff of supply shortages.

– Perform other related duties as required.

– Participate in continuing education through self-study, attending in-services and off-site lectures and meetings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

– LIS software knowledge.

– Organizational skills.

– Knowledge of pipetting.

– Knowledge of common units, measurements, and conversions used in a general laboratory.

– General laboratory skills and techniques.

– The ability to identify basic laboratory materials using the proper scientific name/title.

– Basic knowledge of mathematics, biology and chemistry.

– Basic mechanical skills.

– Basic computer skills (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, network navigation, etc.)

– Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and clients.

– General knowledge of instrumentation utilized.

– General knowledge of assays performed.

– Good knowledge of the Clinical or Anatomic Pathology procedures used in the area of responsibility.

– Knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP) and other regulatory agency standards within area of responsibility.

– Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.

– Knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology used in the area of responsibility.

– Ability to maintain effective reporting procedures and control workflow.

– Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and clients.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

– Bachelor’s degree or educational equivalent in medical/histology and 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

– Current ASCP/AMT/AAB Certification as MT, MLS, or ASCP/AMT certified in specialty area.

– Applicable certifications and licenses as required by country, state, and/or other regulatory bodies.

– Evidence of qualification under CLIA as testing personnel documented.
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

– The ability and willingness to work with potentially hazardous chemicals and instrumentation.

– Moderate use of keyboard requiring repetitive motion of fingers.

– Regular sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

– Occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
