VP, Clinical Laboratory Operations

Lighthouse Lab Services has partnered with an Independent reference laboratory located south of the San Jose, CA area that focuses on molecular laboratory testing. They are looking for a contract VP, Lab Operations Manager to come in and and help organize the company by managing day to day operations.

The person will need to have experience building laboratories or implementing new technologies and methodologies. As well as personnel management and business management experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Overall oversight of the clinical laboratory.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to subordinate team leaders, cultivating a culture that challenges and empowers managers and team members alike to plan effectively and be accountable for driving growth and profitability. 
  • Utilize performance metrics to monitor laboratory performance and achieve revenue and margin targets.
  • Implement a structure and management process that emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, and performance at all levels.
  • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performance team driving relentless focus on the core activities of profitable growth and market expansion. 
  • Develop, plan and recommend budget, capital equipment, and staffing changes to accommodate a rapidly growing cardiology testing business.
  • Conduct strategic reviews of the laboratory’s organizational structure and operations and make the necessary changes to ensure the best use of resources, facilities and people. This will include an emphasis on improving the company’s production efficiency.
  • Evaluate the performance of the Company’s current technologies, and develop appropriate modifications for improvements in precision, accuracy, and cost-efficiencies.
  • Work with management team and, if necessary, outside consultants, to evaluate the lab’s workflow to achieve greater efficiencies, preserving the high level of patient and customer care which is currently being offered. 
  • Prepare and review operational metrics and other data for leadership on a regular basis.
  • Participate in the development of new assays and facilitate technology transfer from development into the clinical laboratory. 
  • Ensure the Laboratory staff conducts diagnostic procedures in accordance to CLIA and CAP regulations and company policies and procedures.
  • Serve as liaison between Laboratory staff and internal/external clients.
  • Understand changes in the healthcare industry that could potentially impact business opportunities. Utilize insight from market research to determine current business needs and opportunities for future business growth. Leverage existing relationships and establish new ones to achieve ongoing revenue.
  • Build and foster an environment of excellence and inclusion by assessing current talent and developing a high-performing team while establishing clear direction of responsibilities, objectives and goals that maintain an ongoing focus on business development and superior client service. Provide employees authority, training, information, and resources to achieve their full potential and maintain a culture of accountability and execution.
  • Position and communicate the vision and services of the organization to customers, business partners and employees by maintaining a high degree of external visibility to enhance the division's credibility and maintain competitive advantage.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Masters degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration.
  • Experience with LDT PCR diagnostics. 
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in a laboratory operations environment, with five or more years of experience in a senior leadership role within a clinical laboratory.
  • Exceptional leadership, mediation abilities, and multi-tasking skills required.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and excellence in healthcare.
  • Prior experience in and willingness to scale a rapidly growing laboratory operation while leading "hands on" within a high growth, entrepreneurial environment. 
  • Well versed in laboratory practices and process improvement (ideally, lean processes / Six Sigma), customer orientation, and information technology/ laboratory information systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of all laboratory functions required with a strong focus on quality, laboratory automation/ liquid handling, budgeting, new technology, and mentoring personnel.
  • Possess inspiring leadership presence and emotional intelligence to influence executives, peers and employees, along with a strong work ethic and a relentless commitment to delivering results.
  • Demonstrated strategic approach to drive performance and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to effectively interact with multiple disciplines, strong teamwork orientation, results driven and technical knowledge of lab environment and logistics/supply chain.
  • Experience working, presenting and communicating with key stakeholders.
