Position Summary: 
Responsible for the overall technical operation of the evening and night shift. Responsible for orientating, evaluating and documenting competency of testing personnel and lab aides. Ensures departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement and safety regulations are met by all employees. Oversees and reviews patient test results and quality control results and takes remedial action when indicated. Maintains departmental expenses and productivity as budgeted.

Reports to: 
Director of Technical Operations

Position(s) Supervised: 
MT, MLT, Lab Aides, Specimen Processors

Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • B.S. in Chemical, Biological, Medical Technology or Physical Science; or equivalent exam required.
  • One year of laboratory training from an accredited program, if B.S. is not in Medical Technology required.

Experience:

  • Four years of laboratory testing in a high complexity environment required.
  • Six years of laboratory testing in a high complexity environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. 
  • Adheres to and enforces prescribed laboratory safety policies and regulations. 
  • Works independently with minimal direction. 
  • Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and the laboratory customers. 
  • Operates general laboratory equipment including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes.
  • Must be able to demonstrate understanding of safety and compliance initiative by strict adherence to all safety and compliance protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical reports. 
  • Ability to write accurate and concise clinical documents, memos and required business correspondence. 
  • Ability to collect and analyze data using statistical methods. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels with the laboratory and with laboratory customers.

License/Certification Required:

Certified in the area of Medical Laboratory Scientist by the ASCP Board of Certification, National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Professionals or equivalent preferred.
